Oh my goodness, what’s that smell?! How many times have we said these words when we walked into a room, opened a fridge, got into a car and smelled something that was…well let’s just say, “not right”?
Like most people, when we encounter a scenario like this, after turning up our nose and squinting our eyes, the very next thing we do is start looking for the source of the smell. We begin our aggressive quest to find out where the scent is coming from because no matter how beautiful the luxury hotel room or how nice the new rental car is, we know that we’ll never be able to enjoy it as long as we have to deal with whatever is stinking. In our pursuit – opening the fridge, checking under the car seats or checking the trash can, our mission is clear – FIND WHAT IS STINKING AND THROW IT OUT!
We should apply this same principle to our minds. In our mind resides our thoughts. Simply stated, our mind can be filled with godly thoughts or ungodly thoughts. It is our thoughts that affect our choices and our choices affect our outcome and what we experience in life.
In Deuteronomy 30:19, the Bible makes it very clear that God has set before us life and death and He desires that we choose life so we can be blessed. It seems like such a simple formula, but what keeps us from choosing life when we know that death will bring nothing but bad results? That answer is plain and simple. It’s stinking thinking. There’s some smelly, spoiled, stinking thoughts that are in our mind and it’s time for them to go!
From the fall of Adam and Eve to this very moment, Satan’s tactics have not changed. The devil cannot make us do anything, but he seeks for us to open our minds for all his thoughts to reside. He cunningly strategizes against us by planting subtle suggestions to take our minds off of God’s Word. And when we succumb to his influence on our minds, we open the door to stinking thinking.
It is this kind of thinking that leads us outside of God’s will. We can easily start to believe that fulfilling the desires of the flesh will be worth it or that we’re missing out by not living a worldly lifestyle. Satan will bombard our minds with thoughts of guilt – “God can never forgive you” – and thoughts of shame – “Do you think God loves you after you messed up like this?”
Once we agree with the enemy, the stinking thinking settles into the core of our heart and spirit and starts to show up in all our decisions. And ultimately, we go down a road God never intended. So how do we get rid of stinking thinking?
The answer lies in Philippians 2:5,
“Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus”.
We have to do as the Bible says in 2 Corinthians 10:5:
“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ…”
If you are going to experience real victory in your life, you MUST cast down stinking thinking and bring EVERY thought the enemy presents into captivity to the obedience of Christ. In other words, don’t let the enemy’s lies roam free in your mind. Instead renew your mind with the Word of God. Take time to study what God says about you. Embrace the Word He is giving you through your Pastor. Let God’s truth of who He is and who you are in Him flood your mind to the point there are no rooms or vacancies for the lies of the enemy.
The transformation God desires to bring about in your life is connected to your mind being renewed (Romans 12:2, Ephesians 4:23). God has great things in store for your life! The stench of stinking thinking is coming from the enemy – so whatever he has planted in your mind to keep you bound, cast it down, throw it out, receive the mind of Christ and get ready to experience victory in every area of your life! Make up in your mind that stinking thinking has no place in your life and you will begin to experience God move in a mighty way in your life like never before!
