There is something amazing and yet mysterious about how God’s love catches and covers us by surprise.
Some weeks before the pandemic hit, we had just had a powerful Sunday worship service and the Pastors were escorted to the guest reception room to meet the first-time visitors. A woman, who appeared to have been crying, walked up with her three children and a friend. Bishop and Pastor Deborah received her, the third set of guests in line, with a warm welcome and a standard question: “How did you hear about the church?”
She mentioned that she was invited. Pastor Deborah probed a little further – “By one of our members?” “No, by my husband…he’s not here – he’s incarcerated.”
She explained that she had never known about the church but her husband was so spiritually moved by the Harvest Life ministry at the prison that she felt that God was leading her to come. She said that she was glad that she did.
God works through us as we extend ourselves to the community. And God’s love works to produce things that we can’t see. Our Prison Ministry is one of the various ways that He works through us – while holding services at Prince William and Fairfax County Adult Detention Centers for over 15 years. And there are many stories like this.
Our Community Reach is a tool that God uses! Along with our Prison Ministry, God’s wrap-around love is felt through our Food Program, Homeless Assistance Program, Clothing Distribution Program, Back to School Program, Community Improvement Program, Community Empowerment Program, Christmas Toy Program, and our fund-raising entity, the “Changing Lives Together” Golf Classic.
Once again, hundreds of cars lined the street and thousands of pounds of food were distributed as Harvest Life Church ministered to the community. But you know that as the “physical ministry” concluded that day – the spiritual ministry was just getting started. God’s wrap-around love was in motion – God never stops working.
God’s wrap-around love flows through individuals that allow themselves to be used of the Lord Jesus. Serving gives heaven an opportunity to ensure that that little miracles happen on earth every day. We thank all of the workers over the years that have given of their time, talent and treasure for the availability of the love of God!
We were made to build the church (Ephesians 4:11-13). God made each one of us with unique talents, personalities and skill sets. And when we give our lives to Jesus through salvation, we’re given spiritual gifts and assignments. We get the most joy and make the biggest difference when we use our God-given talents, gifts and abilities to build the church!
