Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:2
What if I knew of a city where life would be beautiful, fulfilling, where there would be no financial problems, no sickness, no death, no fear, no violence, no discrimination, no aging, no regrets, and no sadness? A place where my Father is the ruler; I am the child of the ruler; and I have a huge loving family of saints. If I knew of such a city, I would want to go there and I would also want those closest to me, especially my children, to go there as well.
What if all I have to do to reach this paradise is to buy a ticket (accept Jesus Christ as my Savior and have faith in Him); keep my ticket ready until the train comes by to take me there; and keep trying to please my Father until I reach the destination? When the time came, I would have to leave my old house, family, friends, and responsibilities, but the city would be so much better than where I currently live and, in fact, better than anything I can imagine.
Also, what if I knew that others could come to the city as well as long as they purchased a ticket like I did.
Well, that city actually exists.
Jesus said, “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will take you to myself; that where I am, you may be also” (John 14:2-3).
Revelation 21:3-4 says, “ And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”
Of all of the people who I want to ensure reach paradise, my children are at the top of the list. As parents, we generally want the best for our children, which includes: that they are saved; have appropriate priorities; they put God first; are financially successful; become leaders; have plenty of friends; do well in school; are confident, happy, and able to make good decisions; have a career that they love; find a mate who they love and who loves them; and have children who are Christians, smart, and well-behaved. At the end of the day though, we don’t know how long our children will live on this earth. It would be nice if they had fulfilling and successful lives while here, but eternity is a lot longer than time on this earth. So more important than the long list of dreams that I have for my children, I want them to live for God and make it to heaven.
We need to have a burden for our children that they will live for God while on earth, expand His kingdom and ultimately go to live in heaven with God and with the rest of the saints of God.
Revelation 2:7 says, “. . . To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God…”
Philippians 3:20 says, “But our citizenship is in heaven…”
Matthew 6: 20 says, “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal…”
Once our children have purchased their tickets, we need to make sure that they are investing in their heavenly citizenship. They need to discover what God wants them to do and work their assignment to build treasures in heaven.
Our children have individual gifts that will specifically benefit the Kingdom. As parents, we need to find every opportunity to pray for and influence our children so they will be saved, reach heaven and invest in the kingdom of God.
