Chapter 13 – Take Correction

“For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?” Hebrews 12:6-7

If you are expecting to experience authentic reinvention then you must be ready and willing to take correction. Correction is one of the most efficient tools in the Kingdom of God. As infractions, mistakes and mishaps occur; correction is a “ready” teacher that helps you to improve immediately. While compliments provide encouragement (which has its value) – the best means of helping you get better quickly and effectively is correction.

In grade school, when you received your paper back from a pop quiz – the green check marks were nice and positive, but the red “X’s” were the most valuable marks on the page. It showed your deficient areas and gave you a starting place for improvement. Although it didn’t feel like it – those red marks were for your good! If you are going to reinvent yourself, you need a trainable spirit.

I have discovered that many people think they are trainable, when in fact they are not. If you are overly opinionated and have a strong personality, that becomes your “signature.” You may then have a difficult time actually hearing instruction.

There are also some individuals who see themselves as humble, laid-back and more on the quiet side – and in normal day-to-day operations this presents no problems. In reality, they will give you a quiet resistance and subtle defiance that is sometimes worse than the extroverted individual – at least you know where they’re coming from.

Not everyone is trainable in their current state. Training requires breaking through old mindsets, overthrowing established patterns and employing periodic shifts of a person’s spiritual paradigm. God needs individuals who are yielded enough to hear His voice, compliant enough to obey His leaders and flexible enough to learn what is needed. This is a tall order and, for some, it may require a personal revolution.

If you are not able to be broken, you are not able to be used by God at higher levels. God reminds us that:

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9
